Pastor’s Corner “A Revelatory Epilogue”

Pastor’s Corner

“A Revelatory Epilogue”

This Third Sunday of Easter, May 04, John tells us about the third time the resurrected Jesus “reveals” himself to the disciples (John 21:1-14). It’s an interesting but seemingly unnecessary story, almost an epilogue, which has me asking why John thought it important to include these additional details. Part of it is setting the stage for the needed resolution between Peter and Jesus (John 21:51-19).

I think, however, that this story also reveals more of Jesus’ heart for his disciples, and therefore for all of us. He wants more face-to-face time with them, to have one more meal together, to talk about their lives one more time. Jesus wants to be with us, to eat with us, to be in an ongoing relationship with us. Even as the Resurrected Lord, he remains interested in supporting us in the details of our lives (“Cast the net on the right side of the boat!”). He wants to be in friendship with us (“Come and have breakfast!”). He wants to provide our daily bread for us (fish was already on the fire, and bread at hand).

In this ongoing Easter Season, I encourage you to set aside time to be with Jesus—simply to spend time with him. One way is to take a resurrection story like this one and read it out loud to yourself slowly three times. Then close your eyes and let your imagination take you into the story. Be one of the two unnamed disciples; listen to the sound of sea; eavesdrop on the conversations the others are having as they fish; watch Peter’s face as John tells him, “It is the Lord”; walk with them to the fire, smelling the roasting fish, and join in the breakfast. What do you want to say to Jesus? What does he say to you? Remember he is the one who has initiated this time with you!

We will, of course, spend time with Jesus together this Sunday at both services. Remember many of our women will be on retreat. Please pray for them as they spend time with Jesus and the woman at the well!
